چکیده

We present the initial results from our search for high redshift, z & 6, quasars using near infrared data from the UKIRT Infrared Deep Sky Survey (UKIDSS) Large Area Survey (LAS). Our analysis of 106 deg of sky from Data Release 1 (DR1) has resulted in the discovery of ULAS J020332.38+001229.2, a luminous (JAB = 20.0, JVega = 19.1, M1450 = −26.2) quasar at z = 5.86. Following candidate selection from the combined IR and optical catalogue data and stacking of multiple epoch Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) data, we have obtained optical spectroscopy for the only two z & 6 quasar candidates. The VLT FORS2 spectrum of ULAS J020332.38+001229.2 shows broad Lyα + NV 1240 emission at ∼8350 Å and an abrupt continuum break due to absorption by the Lyα forest. The quasar is not present in the SDSS DR5 catalogue and the continuum spectral index of α=-1.4 (Fν ∝ ν α) is redder than a composite of SDSS quasars at similar redshifts (α=-0.5). The discovery of one z ∼ 6 quasar in ∼100 deg in a complete sample within our selection criteria down to a median depth of YAB = 20.4 (7σ) is consistent with existing SDSS results. We describe our survey methodology, including the use of optical data from the SDSS and the highly effective procedures developed to isolate the very small surface density of highprobability quasar candidates.

The Optical and Near-Infrared Properties of 2837 Quasars in the UKIRT Infrared Deep Sky Survey (UKIDSS)

The UKIRT Infrared Deep Sky Survey (UKIDSS) is the first of a new generation of hemispheric imaging projects to extend the work of the Two Micron All Sky Survey (2MASS) by reaching three magnitudes deeper in Y JHK imaging, to K = 18.2 (5σ, Vega) over wide fields. Better complementing existing optical surveys such as the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS), the resulting public imaging catalogues pr...

Dust Reddened Quasars in First and Ukidss: beyond the Tip of the Iceberg

We present the results of a pilot survey to find dust-reddened quasars by matching the FIRST radio catalog to the UKIDSS near-infrared survey, and using optical data from SDSS to select objects with very red colors. The deep K-band limit provided by UKIDSS allows for finding more heavily-reddened quasars at higher redshifts as compared with previous work using FIRST and 2MASS. We selected 87 ca...

Luminosity and surface brightness distribution of K-band galaxies from the UKIDSS Large Area Survey

We present luminosity and surface-brightness distributions of 40 111 galaxies with K-band photometry from the United Kingdom Infrared Telescope (UKIRT) Infrared Deep Sky Survey (UKIDSS) Large Area Survey (LAS), Data Release 3 and optical photometry from Data Release 5 of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). Various features and limitations of the new UKIDSS data are examined, such as a problem ...

Scientific goals of the UKIRT Infrared Deep Sky Survey

UKIDSS is the next generation near–infrared sky survey. The survey will commence in early 2004, and over 7 years will collect 100 times as many photons as 2MASS. UKIDSS will use the UKIRT Wide Field Camera to survey 7500 square degrees of the northern sky, extending over both high and low Galactic latitudes, in JHK to K=18.5 (over three magnitudes deeper than 2MASS). UKIDSS will be the true nea...

We estimate the number of z ≃ 7 quasars that will be discovered in the Large Area Survey (LAS) element of the UKIRT Infrared Deep Sky Survey (UKIDSS). The LAS will cover 4000 sq degs of the northern sky to K = 18.4, which is 3 mag. deeper than 2MASS. The Sloan Digital Sky Survey has extended the quasar redshift limit to z = 6.3. We demonstrate that to reach higher redshifts z ∼ 7, when Lyα has ...
